On August 31, 2023, the first-ever Mauritius-China FTA Cooperation Forum was convened, coinciding with the inaugural meeting of the Mauritius-China FTA Joint Commission. The primary objective of this forum was to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and to explore opportunities for the expansion of commercial activities. The discussions centered on strategic initiatives aimed at optimizing the FTA’s potential for enhancing trade and investment between Mauritius and China.
The Head of the Chinese Delegation, Director of Department of World Trade Organisation Affairs, Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Han Yang, emphasized the importance of boosting bilateral trade between the two regions, while the Chairman of the Economic Development Board, Mr Hemraj Ramnial, underscored the forum’s pivotal role in aiding the implementation of the FTA and leveraging the benefits of duty-free access to a wide range of products, including financial services.
